Susan G. Komen Foundation For the Cure® is the world’s largest grassroots network of breast cancer survivors and activists.  The Foundation was started in 1982 by Nancy Brinker to honor the memory of her sister Susan G. Komen, who lost her battle with breast cancer at 36.  Susan G. Komen Foundation For the Cure® is a national volunteer organization with numerous local affiliates throughout America, dedicated to eliminating breast cancer as a terminal disease by advancing research, education, screening and treatment.  In addition to its many generous private donors, fundraising efforts by this foundation have been nothing short of heroic.  Since its inception in 1982, breast cancer research grants totaling more than $400 million have been awarded by Susan G. Komen For the Cure.  It is the world’s largest nonprofit funding source dedicated to curing breast cancer at every stage—from causes to cures to the pain and anxiety of every moment in between.   The Komen Race for the Cure Series is probably the fundraising program of the Foundation known to the general public.  It raises significant funds and awareness for the fight against breast cancer, celebrates breast cancer survivorship, and honors those who have lost their battle with the disease.  In 2008, Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure® celebrated its 25th anniversary, the largest series of 5K runs and fitness walks in the world with well over 1 million participants since 2005 alone.
